Normally, shoe boxes come with bags filled with Silicon dioxide, also known as silica. We usually just throw those them away, but they surprisingly have some pretty awesome uses. How many times have you not actually even realized they were in your new package. Little packets of Silicon dioxide gel are found in all sorts of products because silica gel is a desiccant – it absorbs and holds water vapor.

In electronics, it prevents condensation, which might damage the electronics. If a bottle of vitamins contained any moisture vapor and was cooled rapidly, the condensing moisture would ruin the pills. You will find little Silicon dioxide gel packets in anything that would be affected by excess moisture or condensation. They are a non-toxic, inert desiccant that can nearly dry out everything around them. Here is a short little list of several ways you could use them in your home.

You can save your drowned phone

It turns out rice isn’t the only way to save a phone you may have accidentally dropped down the toilet. Remove the battery and any memory cards from the phone, then toss it in a bowl filled with silica gel packets (dry rice will work, too, in an emergency). Leave it there at least overnight before powering it on again.

Protect your make-up

Place a few of these bags in your makeup case and you will keep your makeup longer by preventing the moisture in your powder makeup.

Put them between towels

You can also help to prevent your towels from getting smelly and damp by simply placing a few silica packets in your towel cabinet. They can help keep your towels dry and keep away that mold smell too.

Protect your old photos

Many of us store our old photos in attics, cellars, or other equally damp places, which can lead to the pictures sticking together and deteriorating over time. Keep them in a box with a few silica sachets and it should keep them dry and intact for longer.

Keep Luggage Dry

These tiny packets can do a great job of keeping luggage dry. You can simply toss a few silica gel packets into your luggage to keep it moisture and odor-free. This could really help to extend the life of your luggage.

Keep jewelry clean and shiny

Moisture leads to tarnishing and discoloration of silver. A couple of bags in your jewelry box will slow down the process.

No more foggy car windows

Ever have fogged up windows during the damp weather season? Instead of sitting there waiting for the heater or AC to do its job, simply put a bunch of silica gel bags under your windshield and watch the magic.

Keep your car windscreen clear

Considering the fact that silica absorbs moisture, you should keep several silica bags into your training bag along with your workout gear, so that you prevent bacteria proliferation. They will also help you get rid of the bad odor and keep your bag dry and clean.

Protect your pumpkin from the mold. Remove the top of the pumpkin. Take a silica bead and embed it into the interior of the pumpkin. Don’t stick the bead in so far that it changes the appearance of the pumpkin’s exterior. When applying the beads, use 3/4 grams of silica for every 100 cubic inches of pumpkin.

Extend the life of your razor blades

Any shaving aficionado will know that moisture is your razor’s worst enemy, with damp blunting your blades before their time. Business Insider recommends keeping your razor in a Tupperware container with a few of these silica gel bags to keep them sharp for longer.
