Calcium is vital mineral for strong bones and teeth. As children, we were taught to drink more milk because it plays a crucial role in the bone health. Doctors, also point out the importance of calcium for all adults, especially women.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Nutrition Board recommends 1,000 mg for both men and women aged 19- 50. Women over the age of 51 should aim for 1,200 mg daily and men over 71 should do the same.

If you have got more cavity than usual, your body may signal a calcium deficiency. Women’s Health Magazine claims that when there is no calcium in the body, it looks for it everywhere, including the teeth.

Brittle nails

Like your bones, your nails also need calcium deposits for maintaining their integrity. Lack of adequate levels of calcium could make your nails extremely weak and susceptible to breaks.


Around 99% calcium present in your body is stored in your bones and teeth. Naturally, if your calcium levels drop, you’ll be susceptible to toothache and decay. Also, you’ll be at a greater risk of suffering from periodontal disease. In children, calcium deficiency has been linked to delayed and defective teething.

Frequent Fractures and Bone Breakage

As stated earlier, calcium is needed to build bones and make them stronger. Lack of calcium can weaken your bones, thus causing frequent fractures and breakage. So if you experience several small bone fractures or full bone breakages, you need to evaluate the amount of calcium in your diet as this is a severe symptom.


People who do not consume enough calcium in their diet suffer from loss of sleep. In certain cases they may fall asleep due to deficiency, but fail to have a satisfactory and deep sleep.

Difficulty Losing Weight

The inability to lose weight – another frustrating issue – has been linked to a lack of calcium. According to animal and human studies, the calcium stored in fat cells helps regulate the processing and storage of fat in the body. Fat cells that contain the most calcium actually burn more fat, leading to weight loss.


Healthline explains calcium is important for proper neurotransmitter function and muscle contractions. Therefore, a deficiency in calcium can cause seizures in otherwise healthy people.

As for the solution, the treatment for calcium deficiency is necessary to prevent long term health issues and maintain strong bones. It can be treated in the following ways.

  • Consume more calcium-high foods like milk, cheese, yogurt, beans, figs, broccoli, spinach, tofu, dandelion leaves, seaweeds such as kelp, sardines, fortified cereals, soy milk nuts and seeds such as pistachio, sesame, almonds, and hazelnuts.
  • If you are unable to get enough calcium from the diet, the doctor may suggest you take calcium supplements. These supplements are available in liquid, tablet, and chewable forms.
  • Caffeine, soda, and excess intake of sodium can disrupt the absorption of calcium. Therefore, take them in moderation, or even better, avoid them completely if you can.
